The Six Phase Meltdown Cycle
Phase 1 – Calm
Overall behavior is cooperative, focused, and acceptable.
Phase 2 – Triggers
May be something in the immediate environment, may be something distant, may be due to an underlying temperament or personality, or may be a combination of virus factors.
Phase 3 – Agitation
Overall individual exhibits sudden increases or decreases in behavior.
Phase 4 – Meltdown
Overall behavior is out of control
Phase 5 – Re-Grouping
Overall person with challenging behaviors withdraws and displays confusion.
Phase 6 – Starting Over
Overall individual is responsive to concrete tasks and reluctant to interact.
